ORCA
Flatwater Instructor
- Formerly the Basic Instructor,
participants earn their certification to teach ORCA
Basic Canoeing courses.
This intensive (but fun) four-day course begins
by teaching the basics of both on-land and on-water
canoeing curriculum. The basic skills are practiced
up to a level consistent with demonstration quality.
participants learn how to write an engaging lesson plan
using a variety of teaching styles geared to the wide
range of learning styles they will encounter as instructors.
In the middle of the course, they become the instructor,
implementing their lessons by teaching their peers
and the course directors. It's more about how to teach
than how to paddle. Course graduates will have earned
the qualifications and confidence to instruct the ORCA
A through D courses to all age groups, as well as lead
a day trip on protected waters. The F.I. certification
is required by many summer camps, and our graduates
work at some of the best.
Lakewater
I
-
This course
is designed to assist the paddler to master their tandem
skills and add some flair to their solo skills.
Day
1 - Arrival, set up tent sites, welcome, the physics of
paddling, safety and first launch.
Day
2 - Most of the eight-hour day is spent developing
tandem skills on the water. Theory components and challenge
races are intermixed appropriately. In the calm after
dinner we begin to work on solo skills.
Day
3 - An early morning solo paddle before breakfast
highlights areas for improvement which we spend the rest of
the morning working on. Demonstration and trials of a
few hot-dogging tricks leave you wanting to get home to
practice as the course closes in the mid-afternoon.
